Birds, like bats, eat many insects. They are nice to watch and to listen to them sing. They can make nests in parts of a house and some, like woodpeckers, can be very destructive to wooden parts of a house. Although very unlikely that someone would be infected there are a variety of illnesses ranging from minor skin infections to serious illnesses can be caused from germs carried by birds. Cryptococcosis is a fungus from pigeon dropping. People can get it by breathing in contaminated dust or getting it in open wounds. Cryptococcus is a skin infection can also occur in infants, elderly persons and those with weakened immune systems. Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease that people can get when they breathe dust from bat or pigeon droppings. Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC, Avian Tuberculosis) is a disease people can catch from birds through the environment. Parrot Fever (Psittacosis; Chlamydiophila psittaci) is a bacterial disease a person might get by breathing in secretions of infected psittacine birds, parakeets, poultry or wild birds.
